After working as a homebased educator, Ronaclaire Totanes discovered a passion for children which led to her completing a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC).
“Working with children wasn’t something I dreamt of doing when I was younger, but it turned out to be something I enjoy and love to do. Every day at work is different and there’s a lot that I learn about myself, the children, and their families.”
Ronaclaire says that what initially attracted her to NZTC was being able to complete her studies through distance learning.
“Distance learning allowed me to take my time with the course guides and readings in the comfort of my own home, rather than having to travel to the campus regularly.”
Ronaclaire says her qualification has given her a more comprehensive understanding of the work that she does in her education centre.
“It has empowered me as a teacher and it has shaped my core values and beliefs too. I am able to apply what I learnt from my course guides in my practice. I am also able to share what I have learnt with my colleagues to see which areas we can improve in.”
For those who are considering studying with NZTC, Ronaclaire says that a fantastic support structure is on hand. As well as ensuring students are confident with their assignments, lecturers actively check up on their students to see how they are progressing and whether they can do anything to help.
“As you begin your course, it’s important to learn how to manage your time and participate in the discussion forum to get insight from other students and lecturers. When you’re stuck and don’t know what to do, the lecturers and IT Help are always there to support and guide you.
“Studying and working at the same time might sound difficult, but nothing is too hard when you love what you do. In fact, I’m so passionate about my work that I have now enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education) with NZTC, and am excited to see where it takes me.”
