Catriona Saussey - New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)

Originally working as a manager on her parent’s dairy farm, Catriona Saussey was inspired to study a Health and Wellbeing qualification after she was diagnosed with Leukemia back in 2015.

“The connections I made with doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants and patients during this difficult time made me realise that one day I would like to give back to the industry.”

Six years later, Catriona is now a graduate of the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and plans to enter the healthcare industry once she has completed her Level 4.

“Every area in New Zealand has a need for healthcare workers, but as a mature student looking at a change in career, it becomes a pretty competitive market searching for new employment. I felt that I needed to have some formal qualifications behind me first.”

NZTC’s online mode of learning is ideal for Catriona’s busy daily schedule.

“I had been struggling to find a tertiary institution that didn’t require practical elements, which is not possible due to my current position. I work long days on our farm, so online learning allows for flexibility and the opportunity to study at a time that suits me.”

Catriona says the college has exceeded all her expectations.

“The NZTC Online learning platform is user friendly and easy to navigate, which is especially useful for those who haven’t studied online before. Lecturers provide constructive feedback on assessments and communication with staff is always professional and prompt.”

Looking forward to putting her skills into practice, promising opportunities lie ahead for Catriona.

“One of my recent assignments required me to conduct an interview with a healthcare professional. They were very impressed with my NZTC achievements, and I was even given an employment application form for when I leave the farm!”
