This qualification is designed for learners who want to gain the foundational knowledge and skills of electrical engineering, including basic practical skills like wiring a sleep-out and drawing electrical diagrams. This programme provides learners with the tools to secure an Electricity Supply Electrical Apprenticeship, Industrial Electrical Apprenticeship, or as a pathway into further study to become a qualified electrician.

This hands-on 32-week programme sets you up to enter the electrical industry as an entry-level employee.

Land a job as Electricity Supply Electrical Apprentice or an Industrial Electrical Apprentice or pathway into further study and become a qualified electrician. The course is pre-entry foundation knowledge of electrical engineering and is suitable for those who wish to enter the industry and who do not yet have electrical apprenticeship agreement.

In this course you’ll get to wire a sleepout, work on a two bedroom house, can carry out a limited range of prescribed electrical work safely and ethically under general supervision of a licensed and registered electrician. This programme is delivered at NZMA's Trades Campus.

  • Hold NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English, Physics or General Science, or equivalent, or have completed the Vocational Pathway in Construction and Infrastructure (Level 2) or equivalent.

  • Meet the minimum requirements of the NZMA Entry Assessment

  • If English is not your first language, you need IELTS 5.0 or above in all bands, or the equivalent*. *Other English Tests / evidence may be approved as advised by NZQA

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA TRADES TRAINING (MPTT)
If you’re Māori or Pasifika and aged 16-40, you might be able to get a scholarship to pay your course fees. This course is also part of the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) programme. You’ll also get one-on-one career coaching, help finding work, and other learner support. You can apply for the MPTT scholarship once you’ve enrolled in your course. Ask NZMA to help apply.
